Asakura Starts 2026 On A High
Tuesday, 06 Jan 2026
Asakura returned with a bang at Terang on January 2, becoming trainer Mitch Freedman’s first winner of the 2026 calendar year and announcing himself as a horse of real promise.
From the moment Freedman laid eyes on Asakura at the Karaka sale, he knew the colt was something special. His athleticism and presence stood out, and Freedman was delighted to secure him. Over the past 18 months, Asakura has developed into an exciting three-year-old prospect, with significant improvement to come.
Asakura had just one start during his previous campaign, finishing a narrow second at Swan Hill on a heavy track after racing on the inferior ground. He was beaten by Welcometotheshow, a form line that has since proven extremely strong, with that runner going on to win four races.
Returning this preparation as a gelding, Asakura presented as a more furnished and focused racehorse, and carried his strong jump out form into race day. Settling into the box-seat position, he travelled comfortably throughout before requiring a touch of luck in the straight. That luck arrived when Dean Yendall guided him through a narrow gap along the rail, allowing Asakura to burst clear and score by 0.75 of a length.
Still early in his career, Asakura shapes as a horse who will continue to improve with time and racing. Freedman said, “He has very good talent but is still a work in progress. We now face a decision whether to step him up in three-year-old grade or target benchmark races against the older horses.”
Congratulations to McGrath Racing and all connections—we look forward to seeing Asakura back at the races later in January.
